Halloween cont.

Tonight we all went to the local living museum to go trick or treating. Everyone but Maddie went under protest., it seems B only wanted omse candy aand K would have been happy to skip the whole thing. Well…since M really wanted to go and there was going to be candy…we went.  We left K with the option of spending her evening at the grandparents working on her term paper and, strangely enough, she decided to come with us ;)

When we got there I made asked the kids to pose for a picture.

It was really windy…

but after a couple of tries we managed to get a shot

DSCF1986

K dressed as a witch, M is Yumi from Code Lyoko and B was a race car driver (I know I said last night that he was a pit crew worker, that ’s what the costume said but he is now insisting he’s a race car driver).  I also dressed up…sort of.  I wore my best pair of flannel PJ’s, put my hair in pigtails and brought along ALice, my rag doll.  No picutres of me…that’s the perks of wielding the camera!

We arrived just as it was getting dark which I personally prefer for Trick or Treating.  The kids hit a couple of houses and then B needed to use the bathroom (typical, I know every public bathroom in the tri-state area).  While he was in there I snapped a couple of shot, the first is M posing, the second is the decorated trees.

We had a blast gathering candy, watching the werewolves in the garden playing with their bones, listening to scary stories, catching a few mintes of The Corpse Bride in the outdoor theater and munching on kettle corn.  We avoided the bonfire because it was in the 70’s which was just downright weird.  There were several scenes going on inside the windows which varied from slightly scary to dowright creepy.  This one was more on the tame end.

One of the last houses we stopped at was the Witches House.  The kids always enjoy her house because she’s dressed to the nines and because she gives out Witches Warts candy, one of their favs.

After about 1.5 hours we’d done everything we wanted to do and everyone was getting hungry so we headed out.

After a quick stop at the grocery store for frozen pizza and some GFCF chicken nuggets we went home, had dinner and went to bed.  Well….the kid went to bed, I’m still awake and updating this blog!

Pumpkins and Moons and Shrunken Heads…oh my!

We decided that we would put up the Halloween decorations here at School Down the Lane. After filling speciemin jars, hanging up spider webs and setting up gravestones we were all in the moood for some Halloween crafts! What did we decided to make? Halloween cut out cookies and shrunken heads of course!

I made the executive decision to use a sugar cookie mix for the gluten full cookies, as well as some of those pilsbury ready to bake chocolate chips cookies. I would normally consider that a cop out, but we were pressed for time and hungry for cookies! Plus, I figured I was making GFCF cookies from scratch so that had to count for something…right? Right? Work with me here people!

I didn’t take any pictures of the ghost and pumpkin cookies I made or the chocolate chip ones, but here is a nice shot of the GFCF ones.

We also decided to make Shrunken Apple Heads. I used the instructions from Our Best Bites http://www.ourbestbites.com/2009/10/crafty-in-kitchen-shrunken-heads.html.

I peeled everyone a granny smith apple and dunked them into a big pan full of water with lemon juice and salt. Then I let everyone go to town carving faces into the apples. Once that was done we put them all on a pan and stuck them into a warm oven (warm from the cookies!). After about a day they looked something like this:

and this

These heads are nowhere done shrinking, the instructions said it could take up to 2 weeks for them to finish drying out. I have ours in a low oven in an attempt to get them to dry faster them that. As of today they are still spongy!

Thursday Thirteen #7-13 things I have dressed as for Halloween

1.  A bunny- I was 6…get your mind out of the gutter! I had bunny ears and a tail and was seriously ticked that my mother made me wear a jacket.

2. A dead body..plastic *knife* through my head, lots of fake blood and white/blue eye makeup all over my face

3.  The thing-I was draped in a shredded sheet…lame.

4.  Static Cling…black clothes with socks and undergarments pinned on and my hair all stuck out with hair spray

5.  Spider lady-I attached rubber and plastic ones all over me and draped on some fake spider webs.  Also wore spider ear rings and a necklace.

6.  Cheerleader…not a stretch since I was one at the time.  In my defense it was so I could take the little ones out trick or treating.

7.  Barbie..plastic mask with eyeholes and a pink plastic cape…chic!  They don’t make them like that anymore (literally).

8.  Baby…footie pajamas and a giant binky.  I drew the line at a diaper.

9.  Witch..big pointy hat, black clothes, green hair spray, wart.  K made me a wand too!

10.  Vampire…plastic teeth, white face paint, black clothes.  I was a bloodsucker before it was cool!

11.   Black cat..ears on a headband, pin on tail, drawn on whiskers and mittens.  The kids made me do it.

12.  Mrs. Weasley…worn dress, apron with a wand in the pocket and red hair spray (OK this one was for Mugglefest but I’m including it anyway! K dressed as Tonks)

13.  A Ghost…white sheet, holes cut in it….. you know the drill.  It’s a classic!

Trick or Treat!

We went trick or treating at a local living museum last night. Despite a few false starts; not being able to find K’s purple hair color, forgetting our gloves, having to park almost a mile away, we had a great time!

I forgot the camera in the car :( so I don’t have any pictures (and yes, that earns me the bonehead award). Instead of have this lovely picture of the map to show you!

dscf14733.jpg

I love the note stating that all adults must be accompanied by a child LOL! Unfortunately you can’t see it because it’s on the other half of the map >:(  I have no idea why this picture won’t post as a thumbnail!!!!

Anyway………..

The kids really liked the hay ride because it had *real* horses (as opposed to a tractor) named Red and Jeb :) We got a seat right up front and the driver explained things to B and M which they thought was pretty darn cool!

They also really liked the kettle corn stand because they had a huge kettle to cook the corn, a big cooling table to cool and salt the corn and a whistle they blew whenever a batch was going from the kettle to the table. The man cooking the corn would yell *corn up!* and the lady would blow the whistle. Like I said a big hit. I got no pictures of it, but here’s one of the kettle corn in a bag:
dscf1474.jpg
It’s VERY good kettle corn and completely gluten and casein free!!  We enjoyed some of it around the bonfire with apple cider chaser and some while watching Harry Potter in the outdoor movie theater.

I can’t say that about all the candy, not would I expect it. They got a LOT of candy though, so even after I weeded through M’s bag she got plenty. Here’s what I picked out of her bag:
dscf1472.jpg

I thought the hay maze was a blast too.  It was not all that big, but they did it inside the barn and made it so you had to stoop through most of it and crawl through some of it.  I was laughing so hard be the end I almost fell over trying to get out!

The kids wore the same costumes they wore to the Halloween Walk and I went as Static Cling (I attached some socks, a pair of panties and a dryer sheet to my sweatshirt with safety pins and stuck my hair up with hair spray).  We saw some great costumes there too; a 6ft Garden Gnome, a candy corn and (my favorite) a kid dressed as the buyout with a a big check slung over him sandwich board style!  Too funny!

We stayed until they closed (which I think explains the large amount of candy as they kept giving the kids hand fulls as we passed) and were out way too late but it was a nice end to the Halloween season.

Now to pack up all the decorations and costumes for next year!

Happy Halloween!

We had our annual Halloween party tonight! It was a blast! We had food, fun and even entertainment. Here are a few shots from the evening.

Our Make Your Own Carmel Apple bar…..

Before:
dscf1461.jpg

and after:
dscf1468.jpg

It was so easy to do the apples.  I melted the carmel in the crockpot like Stephanie did and the kids had no trouble coating their own apples.  I had several topping put out for them to roll their sticky apples in; chopped candy corn and Indian corn, chopped nuts and sprinkles and they used them all!

There were several other Halloween themed food as well…..

These are the preserved eyeballs (aka cream cheese mints) and store bought mini cupcakes,
dscf1462.jpg

For non sweet foods we had: Pus with crunchy dipping bats (buffalo chicken dip w/tortillas cut out in bat shape) and mummy eyeballs (olives in puff pastry),

dscf1466.jpg

Mummy dogs and bloody guts (chili),
dscf1467.jpg
And here is a picture of M playing at the potions table.  These potions were not really to drink, although they were non-toxic in case someone got brave ;)   It was really more of a science experiment then a cocktail bar.
dscf1463.jpg

K and her friend C put on a play with the help of B and then they did a dance. They called the style *Lazzhopping* because it was a combination of Lyrical, Jazz, Hip hop and Cheerleading LOL! We also had The Nightmare Before Christmas playing in the living room.  We had K’s friend T over, along with her little sister and they seemed to enjoy the evening too.

I had a lot of fun assembling the ingredients for the potions table.  We had Red Blood (red cabbage juice), Truth serum (vinegar), zombie virus (sugar water colored green), embalming fluid (baking soda and water), rat poison (baking soda), sulfuric acid (wine), spider venom (tea) and liquid phantom (cola).  The favorite potion was one that involved combining Red Blood and Truth serum and then adding a scoop of rat poison.  Can you guess what it looked like?

The only guffaw was that I didn’t realize that T didn’t eat meat.  Oooops! She did eat some mummy eyes and a mini cupcake and her little sis enjoyed making her carmel apple and eating it :) I hope she eaten dinner before coming over!

Halloween Walk for Charity

Tonight we all attended a Halloween Walk at the local Rec area to benefit the local food pantry. The admission was two cans of food or two dollars. We brought 2 cans of potatoes, 2 cans of carrots, 2 cans of corn, two cans of green beans and two cans of kidney beans :) Costumes were optional, but of course my crew dressed up!

Here is M dressed as Sally from A Nightmare Before Christmas. Notice how she has Jack Skellington with her (he’s the doll LOL!). I made that costume I’ll have you know! Well, most of it :)

dscf1448.jpg

K dressed punk. She’s a bit scary, no?

dscf1450.jpgIt’s hard to see her hair but it’s purple on top. Her shirt was one she already had and the skirt was given to her. She decorated everything with safety pins and bought some black lipstick and nail polish. She also already owned the skeleton shoes ;)

B was my knight in shining armour *sigh* The picture is blurry because he wouldn’t stop slashing!

dscf1449.jpg His costume was basically some black sweats, a black pillow case *tunic* and boots made of grey sweat socks pulled up over his crocs. We got the gauntlets, sword and breastplate at Dollar Tree.

The walk itself was really fun! Nothing too terrifying, but some of the characters were pretty creepy! This Witch was one of them, she kept asking us to *stay for dinner* LOL! M said *No thank you!*. :)

dscf1459.jpg

There was even a fire spinner to watch while you waited to get in line,

dscf1452.jpg

and a scary gargoyle guarding the entrance.

dscf1457.jpg

After the walk they had refreshments, popcorn and coffee/tea/hot chocolate. There was also a bowl of candy for the kids to pick out of as well as goody bags for $.10 and baked goods for $.25. I bought the kids two goody bags each and a brownie for me and W. I figured it was for a good cause. We all had something warm to drink as well since it was COLD! K is thinking she is going to have to modify her costume a little because she was nearly frozen by the time we left to go home.  B was really impressed and I think M enjoyed herself as well.  K says it was just OK, but I have a feeling that opinion came more from her being so cold then anything else.  We saw several friends and coffee was pretty good so it was a success as far as I’m concerned!

Now to start planning our Halloween party in earnest!

Holiday Preparations-Halloween

We really enjoy Halloween at The School Down the Lane! Costume planning usually begins sometime in August and decorating starts as soon as K’s birthday is over at the end of September.  This year we really had some fun spookifying our house!

Here is the giant spider guarding the door:
dscf1421.jpg

and the graveyard in the side yard:
dscf1426.jpg

Some horrible stuff has been going on the front yard!
dscf1422.jpg
dscf1423.jpg
Darn grave robbers!

This guy is pretty cute.
dscf1424.jpg

Here is the front garden, complete with dog mummies and a ghost:
dscf1428.jpg

The inside is almost as elaborate. We have our deadly bar set:
dscf1435.jpg
and our specimen jars:
dscf1438.jpg
Even the dogs get in on the act!
dscf1429.jpg

The kids are done with their costumes too; K is dressing punk, M is going to be Sally from A Nightmare Before Christmas and B is going as a knight. We are going to be attending a Halloween walk to benefit local soup kitchens this weekend as well as going to Ghosts on the Banke on Halloween. The kids are trying to convince me to have a Halloween party again this year and they may just have me. As long as I don’t actually plan on having anyone come I won’t be disappointed again, right? They always enjoy it anyway. Hmmm…we could have finger sandwiches LOL!
